My name is Megan Lamb, and I was born and raised in Wichita. Growing up in the area, I had heard of Rainbows before, but my first personal connection to the organization came through an interesting AmeriCorps position which I applied for and later obtained.
I first began volunteering at Rainbows as an AmeriCorps VISTA, meaning I volunteered full-time for the agency. Being able to utilize my marketing degree and learn new things is what initially sparked my interest in this VISTA opportunity. However, after learning more about Rainbows’ mission, it quickly made me even more attracted to the organization. Who wouldn’t want to volunteer for the kids after hearing their amazing stories?
During my time as a VISTA, I worked directly with Rainbows’ staff and helped with various items, such as social media, event planning, and writing stories. I learned so many new things as an AmeriCorps VISTA: creating video content, operating Photoshop and InDesign programs, and the ‘ins and outs’ of grant writing, just to name a few!
My all-time favorite memory during this VISTA year was going to Camp Woodchuck for the first time. I was greeted by one of the Campers…running…full-force…at ME! Of course, to give me a great BIG hug! It is something I will never forget. Seeing Rainbows’ through the eyes of a VISTA allowed for some great experiences: the kids I met, getting warm-fuzzies when hearing their stories, witnessing the staff at work firsthand, and getting learn so many things along the way.
After my AmeriCorps VISTA days, I began volunteering for Rainbows’ fundraising events. This past year, I participated in both the Run|Walk and Fashion Passion. I usually help as a team lead for other volunteers or wherever they need me. I have made it my mission to be able to volunteer for at least two Rainbows’ events each year. These fundraising events are SO much fun! There is always so much excitement and it really is rewarding.
There’s a lot people don’t know about Rainbows. I think others should know about the many different departments, amazing staff, volunteers, and board members who all work fiercely to make sure Rainbows’ is a great organization. Without them, the agency would not be where it is today. It is really hard to imagine how much work goes into not only their fundraising events but the daily operation without actually experiencing the ‘behind the scenes’. I’m lucky to have gotten the chance to do so.
I would definitely tell others to volunteer with Rainbows, whether you are hanging out with the kiddos or volunteering at an event to raise funds. There is such a positive vibe and sense of happiness when volunteering here. Getting to see the kids have a fun time and hearing their heartwarming stories is extremely satisfying.
When I am not volunteering, I like to spend my time how a lot of people do: with friends, family, and my best fur friend. I enjoy going to the movies, seeking out the best places to eat, and traveling whenever I can. I recently started my real estate career and work full time at a property management company. It is something I have never done before, but change is good in my book. I hope to one day get back into working in the non-profit world.
