“I am glad I have a job I love going to everyday” said Susan Harsh, site coordinator of Rainbows’ Bright Beginnings in Butler County. Susan has been a part of Rainbows for 20 years. She has a bachelor’s degree in social work and family and child development from Kansas State University and a master’s degree in social work from Washburn University.
Susan is proud of her work in Butler County. “We started with a program that served 12 children to one that serves over 180 a year,” she said. Bright Beginnings serves children birth to three through 17 early intervention services such as occupational therapy, vision services, and family training. Bright Beginnings also partners with other organizations to benefit children and their families.
Working with infants and toddlers with special needs has had an impact on Susan’s personal life as well. “Initially it was being able to see the children as unique and not to be pitied,” she explained. “They merely learn or move through their lives a little differently, but they all have the potential to learn and contribute to their communities.” Overseeing all of the families that go through Bright Beginnings has made her realize that all parents really do want what is best for their children. “I am really glad I got the chance to work with this population because it’s been great!” said Susan.
Susan is married to Bob, and has two children, Baylie and Abby and enjoys watching them swim and play volleyball. She is a huge fan of K-State and Chiefs football. Another hobby is gardening.
