“Having Emmanuel in our lives has changed our entire family for the best,” said Jasmine, his older sister, age 14. “We didn’t know we were missing this special person in our lives until he was born and his personality began to show.” His mother, Ofelia, agrees. Having a young toddler with older siblings has been a blessing to their family. He adds so much life and makes us all appreciate the little things we take for granted as adults and teens.
A busy guy who is constantly moving from room to room, Emmanuel is on the go, but that wasn’t always the case. At around 9 months, he wasn’t crawling and his muscles weren’t strong enough to support development of his muscles. The family’s pediatrician made a referral to Rainbows for early intervention services.
Ofelia felt sad and disheartened to know that her child needed more support than she was capable of giving to him. She felt so much relief when her doctor referred her to Rainbows.
“I was happy to have help figuring out what my son needed,” said Ofelia. “It had been so long since my children were toddlers, I was unsure about how to help him. I felt helpless. Rainbows made all the difference.”
Once the referral was made, a team of Rainbows’ professionals came to the family home along with an interpreter to ensure communication in Spanish was clear. “Having a Spanish speaking person as part of the visits is especially comforting to me,” said Ofelia. “I feel like my concerns for my son are understood clearly and I know what to do to help him get stronger.”
Melynda, Rainbows’ Physical Therapist began visiting Emmanuel and his family in their home along with Scarlet, Rainbows’ Spanish interpreter, within a few weeks of the referral. With this support, Emmanuel got stronger and began to scoot on his bottom around the room. By his second birthday he started to run and hasn’t stopped. “He’s always running, now,” said Jasmine.
“Rainbows helped me learn ways to encourage my son’s development as part of his routine,” said Ofelia. “I would recommend anyone wanting help with their young child to contact Rainbows. The therapists are very knowledgeable and there is no language barrier with the interpreter at the visits.” She notes the convenience of having the therapist come to your home is also a welcome part of the service. This flexibility fits into our busy lives and Emmanuel and his family gain new skills with every visit.
Two-year-old Emmanuel loves trucks, cars and stacking cups Melynda uses when she comes for therapy visits. “He’s so proud when he stacks them and then knocks them over,” said Melynda. “He’s made significant progress in the year I’ve been working with him and his family. They are a sweet family who take my suggestions and implement them each time.”
A healthy little boy who lights up the room, Emmanuel loves to eat just about anything!
Emmanuel loves his big brother Diego, age 17 and his older sister Jasimine, age 14. It’s easy to see how much they love him too. From teasing and playing to treats and encouragement, the older kids are a positive influence on him. Mom is a talented cook and started her own business cooking and selling traditional Hispanic dishes for others. Dad works for a landscaping company. He regularly travels to other cities in Kansas for work. Brother Diego has a job at Chick-fil-A after school.
Rainbows provides an in-person Spanish interpreter for families who speak Spanish and uses a translation service for other languages. “It’s so important for the family to be able to express their concerns and understand how they can impact their child’s development,” said Scarlet. “Being the bridge of language so families get the help they need has been rewarding for me. It’s a privilege to see the children and families grow as they gain new skills and their child progresses through early intervention services.”
Any family with a concern about their infant or toddler’s development may call Rainbows for an evaluation. A doctor’s referral is not required. When a child qualifies for services like speech/language pathology, physical or occupational therapy, hearing, vision or other services, these are provided at no cost to the family in the family home.
