Volunteers Make Memories at Camp Woodchuck

Volunteers Create Joy for Campers

By the time Camp Woodchuck staff say “goodbye and see you next year” to this summer’s Campers at the end of July, more than 250 volunteers will have shared their time, talent and sweat, making Camp Woodchuck a memorable experience for Rainbows’ school-age youth with special needs.

Before Camp even began, volunteers from DeVaughn James Injury Lawyers and Spirit AeroSystems were already hard at work preparing everything from the playground to the kitchen. They deep-cleaned the classrooms, kitchen, bathrooms and gym, painted parking lot lines, and meticulously trimmed trees and bushes, setting a welcoming atmosphere for the soon-to-arrive Campers.

During Camp, volunteers play a crucial role in creating interactive experiences for Campers. Textron High School interns planted flowers in front of the building and then helped youth plant their own flowers in take-home pots to share with their families.  The highly anticipated visit from cyclists with Journey of Hope saw the Campers and cyclists in total play mode as they gleefully covered each other in white foam during the annual Shaving Cream Battle.

Behind every successful event are volunteers who handle logistics with precision. Volunteers from Meritrust Credit Union set up and tore down tables and chairs, while other volunteers created decorations to enhance the themes of events. Volunteer contributions also included donating baked goods and serving treats to Campers and guests, adding a sweet touch to special occasions.

Special events like the Camp Carnival featured face painting, carnival games, and fake tattoos, adding an element of fun and excitement thanks to the dedication of volunteers. To the delight of Campers, volunteers dressed up as beloved characters like Spiderman and Ice Queen adding a touch of magic and wonder to the Camp atmosphere.

Local personalities Bonnie Bing and Sean DiGiovanni brought an extra level of entertainment as they emceed Fashion and Talent Show performances, creating memorable moments for everyone involved. Stylists from Paul Mitchell School generously offered their expertise, transforming Campers’ appearances with stylish hair and makeup for the Fashion Show.

Volunteers extended their care beyond just activities, providing moments of relaxation during Spa Day. They pampered Campers with nail painting and mini massages, offering much-needed rejuvenation amidst the camp’s energetic atmosphere.

Volunteers surprised the youth by bringing real race cars and dragsters for the kids to touch and admire. Community volunteers from the Wichita Police and Fire Departments brought their police cars, firetrucks and mascots, Sgt. Justice and Sparky who shared hugs, high-fives and even a little dancing. A bucket truck from Cox and a scissor lift from Duke Rentals also provided unique experiences.

In the final weeks of Camp, a special visit to McConnell Air Force Base will give the Campers an up-close, hands-on opportunity to sit in the cockpit of an aircraft, try on tactical gear, watch a canine demonstration and admire the beauty of the Color Guard. Volunteers from KU School of Medicine will help Campers cool off with an ice cream social and volunteers from Kansas College of Orthopedic Medicine will ensure Camp Graduation is a moment to remember.

Thank you to the many volunteers whose dedication and selflessness make Camp Woodchuck a remarkable experience for everyone involved.  Volunteers do more than serve, they help create joy and memories for Rainbows’ Campers.
