Dream Job Reflection

Why Blarney Breakfast matters

Banning family

Legacy of Love
For 25 years, Rainbows has been an integral part of my life, beginning the day our daughter Mia was born. The connections, patience, and unwavering support I have received from Rainbows’ staff and families have been nothing short of overwhelming. This organization and its Mission have truly shaped my life, and I will always be grateful for the incredible impact it has had on me and my family. Coming to work at Rainbows has been a journey—not simply a job for me.

In January 2009, our daughter underwent a major surgery. The 6-week recovery was every bit of brutal. I’m not going to lie—it was a very dark time for Mia and me. I remember Johnny Cash playing on repeat in her bedroom. When our trusted and lifesaving supportive home care attendant that Rainbows provided us arrived to help, she knew immediately that this was not typical of Mia, me, nor our family. She recognized that we were in crisis mode. In one evening, she completely transformed us, simply by being there with us. She helped with repositioning, bathing (and who isn’t better after a relaxing bath?), and shifting the mood from Johnny Cash to Simon & Garfunkel.

Missions moments
At Rainbows, we are driven by a shared belief in our Mission—one that prioritizes love, understanding, and the well-being of children of all abilities. Our top priority is to ensure that this Mission remains strong. Our world is evolving, and so are the needs of the children and families we serve. In response, we are continually adapting our service models to meet these ever-changing demands, ensuring that every child receives the care and support they need to thrive.

One of the greatest challenges families face today is uncertainty. Whether it’s concerns about their child’s future, the availability of essential support services, or the impact of funding constraints, the unknown can be daunting. I remember when my husband, Jeremy, and I got the first estimate for Mia’s Kid Kart (miniature wheelchair). When we opened the mail (yes, it was an estimate in the actual mail) were catatonic and in that moment, fully understood what STICKER SHOCK meant. It cost more than our first car! We had no idea how we were going to pay for it but knew she absolutely needed it. Thanks to the guidance from Mia’s Targeted Case Manager, Tammy, at Rainbows’, we were able to connect with two community resources – Cerebral Palsy Research Foundation and the Kansas Society for Children with Challenges both of which agreed to match whatever our insurance would cover.

Through every challenge, Rainbows has been a beacon of hope—a guiding light providing strength and stability to families in need.

Your presence matters
Our donors, supporters, and volunteers are the heartbeat of Rainbows. Your generosity and dedication make it possible for us to continue this vital work. If there is one piece of advice I can offer, it is this—just show up. When you step into our world, walk alongside our children, and witness the magic they bring, I promise, you will never be the same. Whether you are a parent seeking help or a community member looking to make a difference, your presence matters. Our children are changing the world, and they can’t wait to show us how.

Every year, our incredible community comes together in full force to support Rainbows at the beloved Blarney Breakfast. In 2001, Mia had the special honor of being featured on the iconic placemats handed out at the event. That morning was nothing short of magical—Mia was captivated by the dazzling Irish dancers and the radiant Miss Kansas, Kimberlee Grice. It was a morning filled with joy, connection, and the power of people coming together to make a difference, year after year.

Gratitude
Thank you for believing in Rainbows and for being part of our journey. Together, we are building a future filled with love, inclusion, and endless possibilities. I’m so happy to be a part of it!
