The Importance of Routines for Toddlers

What is more frustrating for parents then wondering why their child is consistently testing boundaries and why is it so difficult to establish daily routines? These are questions I have been continually asked in years of working in early intervention. Research shows that toddlers have less stress and feel secure when they know what to expect during the day.

Routines are a great way to help your child feel secure and it can also help with meltdowns. I suggest having routines at mealtimes, naps and bath/bedtime. Playtime can be a mix of structured play and free play to allow children’s executive brain functions to develop.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) points out, structure is good for kids and parents, because it’s easier for parents to feel confident when life is predictable and when they know how to respond.

Tips for Establishing Daily Routines:

  • Start Small – Establish a mealtime or bath/bedtime routine.
  • Be Consistent – Do what you say.
  • Communicate – with child’s caregivers about expectations.
  • Don’t Give up!
